Green Can Collection
ANNUAL GREEN CAN COLLECTION PROGRAM
This popular program was originally conceived as a local effort to reduce landfill waste and promote eco-friendly practices. In 2021, the City Commission voted to add a fee to the service to help offset costs associated with providing this service to the community.
WHAT IS ACCEPTED:
- Branches and Brush: Residents must cut the brush down to size. No branches longer than 4 feet or larger than 6 inches in diameter. Do not allow branches to stick out of the top of cans. They will not be picked up.
- Leaves: Loose leaves may be placed in the can. Pack down as much as possible.
- Grass Clippings: Grass clippings are not collected curbside at any time. Place them in your green can. It is a violation of City ordinance to blow or move them into the street.
- Garden Debris and Weeds: Garden debris includes material from vegetable and flower gardens like tomato vines, dead plants, corn and sunflower stalks, and weeds.
WHAT IS NOT ACCEPTED:
Keep all garbage, dirt, rocks, and other non-compostable material out of the green cans. If drivers find green cans filled with garbage, the whole load is contaminated and becomes regular garbage. Offenders will be charged for an additional pick-up fee.
COLLECTION DATES:
The annual season runs from the beginning of May through the last week of October. In the event of freezing rain or snow, the potential for an early program conclusion arises, as wet or frozen contents are nearly impossible to collect. 2024 Final Collection Days
COSTS:
- Full season: A monthly fee of $7.00 per month/per can.
- Partial season: Residents who choose not to use the full service from May through October will pay an administrative fee of $3.00 for delivery and/or pick up of green cans. Due to green can availability, this fee may be waived for late-season additions to the green waste program.
HOW TO ENROLL:
- Call the Public Works office at (406) 222-5667. We'll schedule a delivery of the green can and coordinate with our Finance Office to add the monthly service to utility billing.
- Tenants must have property owners contact our office to authorize adding the service to billing. No exceptions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Each can should display an annual sticker. These stickers serve as visible indicators to drivers that the household is actively participating in the program. Failure to display the current sticker will result in the cannot being collected.
- Previous program participants are mailed annual stickers with the Spring Flyers. Public Works can provide replacement stickers by contacting (406) 222-5667.
REMINDERS:
Do not overfill the containers. Trucks cannot properly empty them.
Do not bag the clippings in these containers
Do not leave loose debris on the boulevard
