About Us

The Public Works Department plays a vital role in the City of Livingston, directly impacting the daily lives of our residents and supporting the city's growth and sustainability.

We enhance Livingston’s quality of life and economic development by:

  • Providing clean drinking water that exceeds testing standards.
  • Maintaining and beautifying city parks and green spaces.
  • Overseeing sewer, water, and paving projects.
  • Ensuring reliable garbage collection services.
  • Plowing city streets during the winter months.

Our responsibilities also include managing permitting, design, and maintenance efforts for:

  • City streets and alleys
  • Sanitary sewer systems
  • Water mains
  • Street lighting infrastructure

The Public Works Department serves an area of over 6 square miles, maintaining:

  • 71 miles of streets
  • More than 50 city-owned buildings
  • 8.5 miles of trail systems
  • 173 acres of green space
  • 3,880 trees

Through these efforts, we ensure the vitality, safety, and beauty of the City of Livingston, making it a great place to live, work, and visit.

  • Sewer Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) project begins August 22, 2025.

  • Curb Extensions Pilot Project – The City Planning Department is testing new streetscape features outlined in the Downtown Master Plan.

  • Public Meeting – Regional Water Preliminary Engineering Report – The final public meeting on the Green Acres & Montague Subdivision Preliminary Engineering Report will be held on August 27, 2025, before submission to the Commission on September 16, 2025.

  • Pothole Patching – Work continues as weather and materials allow. Please drive with caution, as crews may be active throughout town.

  • Lead & Copper Pipe Inventory – The City and WET are conducting a second round of mailers and door hangers for 2,200 households that have not responded. Residents are urged to complete the survey online or return the mailed form to ensure accurate data. Complete the survey here.
