Patrol Services

The Livingston Police Department provides 24-hour patrol coverage, working to:

  • Reduce crime
  • Enforce traffic laws
  • Respond to citizen requests for assistance

Patrol officers work four 10-hour shifts, with three days off. Shifts rotate every two months and include:

  • 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • 5:00 PM – 3:00 AM
  • 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  • 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM (during full staffing periods)

Patrol officers are often the first point of contact for residents in need. Their visibility and proactive policing serve as a deterrent to crime and ensure public safety.

Patrol activities are supervised by three Sergeants, who work five 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday:

  • 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM

Investigations

The Livingston Police Department has one full-time investigator, typically working 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. However, hours may adjust based on case demands.

The Detective's duties include:

  • Investigating felony cases
  • Working with the County Attorney’s Office to prosecute offenders
  • Registering and maintaining records of sexual and violent offenders

Bicycle Patrol

Bicycle Patrol Officers operate primarily during the summer months (weather and staffing permitting). This method of patrol is highly effective for:

  • Conducting discreet patrols in the downtown business district and residential areas
  • Enhancing community engagement and accessibility
  • Hosting bicycle safety classes for children

School Resource Officer (SRO) Program

One specially trained officer serves as the full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) during the school year. The SRO is dedicated to:

  • Enhancing safety and security for students and staff
  • Educating students about the law and fostering respect for law enforcement
  • Building positive relationships within the school community
  • Preventing problems before they occur through proactive engagement

The SRO works closely with school officials to address criminal offenses on or near school property and is available for school emergencies. This position is jointly funded by the City of Livingston and the Livingston School District through a contractual agreement.
