Sewer Department

Wipes clog pipes

Livingston’s Sewer Department provides maintenance for 43.3 miles of sewer mains and lift stations throughout town. This infrastructure delivers an average of one million gallons of wastewater a day to the Water Reclamation Facility. Many of the residential sewer lines in use today were installed over one hundred years ago and require large amounts of jetting and root-cutting maintenance to function correctly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

My Sewer is backing up; what do I do?

If you experience a sewer backup, please call the Livingston Public Works Department (406) 222-5667 first so the staff can check the mainline. If your backup is after hours, contact the non-emergency line at Livingston Dispatch (406) 222-2050, and ask for them to call the on-call staff.

What can be done to prevent sewer back-ups?

You can read more about what can cause sewer backups and how to prevent them here: Sewer Service Information. To help keep our plumbing systems functioning properly and prevent sewer backups, please refrain from flushing the following items down the toilet:

  • Paper towels, shop towels or tissues, unlike toilet paper, these do not disintegrate easily in water.
  • Vinyl, Latex, contraceptives or Rubber Gloves
  • Cotton balls or swabs
  • Sanitary wipes of any kind, even those labeled "flushable" can cause backups in residential service lines
  • Clothing or washcloths
  • Diapers or baby wipes
  • Feminine hygiene products do not break down and can lead to serious blockages.
  • Chemicals, oil or grease
  • Food scraps

I've had Roto-Rooter come to my house, do I need to let you know?

If you have had Roto-Rooter perform sewer cleaning or root-cutting services at your residence, please notify our office immediately. It is essential for us to inspect the main city line, ensuring that there is no risk root blockages causing a backup.

Our services are available 24 hours a day. For regular business hours, you can reach us Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM at 406-222-5667. For after-hours assistance or on holidays, please contact Dispatch at 406-222-2050.
