Yellowstone River Channel Migration Zone Mapping Project
Park County has undertaken an update to the Yellowstone River Channel Migration Zone (CMZ) mapping, covering approximately 86 miles of river from Gardiner to Springdale. This effort, funded by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), provides essential data on river movement to help assess flood-related risks, support emergency planning, and guide sustainable development along the river corridor.
The project’s goal is to update and refine previous CMZ maps, integrating new high-resolution data to reflect the impacts of the historic 2022 flood. By identifying areas prone to erosion and channel migration, this mapping effort aids landowners, emergency responders, and policymakers in making informed decisions about infrastructure, conservation, and flood mitigation.
The Yellowstone River is a vital resource for Park County, supporting local economies, wildlife, and recreation. Understanding its natural movement helps balance community growth with environmental resilience. The updated CMZ maps are a valuable tool in preserving the long-term health and sustainability of the river while minimizing risks to properties and infrastructure.
